We took the well-established and known material of traditional cotton and refined it even further. And after ironing it looks a little bit better, but still unacceptable.

I admit, it was cheap. Have I shot myself in the foot because the cotton is not very good, or is this like normal behavior for heavyweight gi's? I've heard other people take their gi's to dry cleaning...is this why?

Do you tumble dry? Line dry or dry flat. Yes it takes ages but it will loosen up.

Also, good on you for ironing, you should always look presentable in the dojo. So many people I have trained with don't.

I just hang it and let it air dry.

Heh, I don't usually iron my gi's...but my gi's don't usually look like they've been kept in a trash bin, so I had to try in this case. :)

All of the heavyweight dogi I have owned do that, but I don't really care, because they are workout clothes. That said, I do occasionally like them to look nice for demos or seminars. In that case, let the gi soak overnight, which will relax the fabric, then take it out before the machine puts it through a spin/drain cycle. Hang it up to try, pulling on the fabric to smooth out any wrinkles you see. Once it's dried, there shouldn't be nearly as much wrinkling, and it should be easier to iron.

I've had 10oz and 12oz Gi's that do the same thing. It's basically because it's new. You have to train in it a couple months to soften up the cotton. It will get better I believe.

I agree. I have a 14oz Shureido, first wash or two ended up like that especially the pant legs and sleeves on the top. After training in it and washing it a few more times, it turned out fine. I used fabric softener when I washed my gi, which may have sped up the process.

Shotokan karate

Sometimes gi's are dumb. Here's what works best for me: Wash Gi, hang to dry.

After dry, lay flat, smooth out.

We your hand. No, really, wet your hand. Using the side of your hand, slide it from inside seam to out (ie: shoulder seam to cuff on a sleeve). Not only should this get the wrinkles out, it should give it a bit of a press. Then, fold gi top into 1/3rds (like a tshirt)so that the front isn't covered. Fold the sleeves straight down the back, Take your gi pants, poke out the crotch so that it sticks out straight, fold the crotch over so the legs are straight, fold in half, lay on top of sleeves, fold all of it into 1/3rds, wrap belt around it. That keeps it straight.

My gi got much softer with washes. I would suggest you to wash it again with a lot of fabric softener by the end, smooth it a bit after hanging it, and then ironing with the help of a spray.

The spray can be pure water or something like 1 part fabric softener, 7 parts water. Mix on a bottle and spray on the areas you will iron immediately - also set the iron in the hottest temperature indicated for cotton. I never had to do that with my gi, but with several other cotton-type clothes, works amazing.
